Soul Needs
An overhaul of human needs
We all need the same basic things: food, shelter, sleep, clothes and reproduction, as hypothesised by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. I feel that our human needs are more physical and materialistic in nature and as a result, too much effort is put into looking good rather than feeling good. Some are more needed than others, such as a car. A car takes you to point A to point B regardless if it is a luxury or just a basic, hopefully, green fuel-efficient four-wheeler. In this pressure of chasing material wealth, have we been neglecting our soul needs? Don’t we need to feel good rather than just look good?
Our Souls I believe has different needs. Our Souls need kindness, love, compassion and joy. Our Souls need to be and feel elevated, with the help of other high vibed souls. We need to feel valued and validated. As a mother of two Tweens, I do all I can to raise them as consciously as possible, to make them feel more sovereign and more respectful of their own Soul needs. As much as I emphasise the necessity of achieving good grades at school, I am a bigger advocate of the meaning of EQ rather than just focusing on IQ. Time will tell whether I got it right, but there is no right or wrong in trying to make our children better humans. It is about learning from our past mistakes and acknowledging that our journey is a mere lesson.
Our parents equated good education to good careers. But what about our fundamental need for happiness? Is it just me who feels that happiness has been relegated to a luxury, which could well translate into our obsession with accumulating luxury goods and unnecessary things? Happiness is a Soul need, but our obsession with materialism has often marginalised it. We have perhaps lost the meaning of true joy and put our Soul needs on the back burner. The same goes with our relationships, I feel. The moment an app was developed to match people, romance became a transaction with sex as a currency. The sacred act of love, the sacred act of two souls in a deeply committed relationship became for many, animalistic and with very little feelings or emotional investment. Or perhaps it became a confusion of genuine love with sexual desires. People are not commodities, feelings are not to be commoditised and Soul needs should never be marginalised.
I believe that the way we conduct our lives, relationships, academic careers, professional careers, businesses will differ from how we have gone about these. I believe we can function better when we raise ourselves and listen to our soul needs and when we become more loving, compassionate, and more forgiving. A growth mindset is not always about academic or career success or marriage. Of course, these can bring happiness to us all, but I believe these are the low-bearing fruits of strong and well-nourished Souls.
